UH-Hilo student leadership awards

Nominations are being accepted for the University of Hawaii at Hilo’s Ka Lama Ku Student Leadership Recognition Awards for the 2015-16 school year.

The university and community-at-large are eligible to nominate students with six or more credits and fall 2015 graduate students with a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA to be honored for their formal and informal leadership roles.

Students can be nominated for the following:

• Alaka‘i Award: Leadership.

• ‘Ike Papalua Award: Gift of vision.

• Kuleana Award: Accountable and responsible.

• Laulima Award: No task is too big when done by all.

• Malama Award: Taking care of others.

Additional criteria and nomination forms are available at the Ka Lama Ku website, http://hilo.hawaii.edu/campuscenter/leadership/recognition_awards.php.

Only printed nominations and essays will be accepted and must be submitted no later than 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, to Campus Center Room 309. Winners will be announced at the Student Recognition Ceremony on May 3.

April agriculture workshops offered

The University of Hawaii at Hilo’s College of Continuing Education and Community Service is offering two agriculture workshops with Zach Mermel this month at the Hawaii Community College Palamanui campus in Kailua-Kona.

The Secrets of the Soil series on April 23 begins with Part 1 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and will explore the basics of soil biology. Part 2 will be from 2-5 p.m.

The cost is $40 for Part 1, $30 for Part 2, or $60 for both sessions.

Edible Landscaping will be from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. April 30. Participants should bring an aerial photo or TMK map of their land as well as colored pens and pencils. Tuition is $55.

4 on dean’s list at Azusa Pacific

Several Big Island residents made the academic deans list at Azusa Pacific University in California.

Honored for a fall 2015 GPA of 3.5 or better were:

Keawe Alapai of Holualoa and Caitlyn Kuntemeyer, Tiara Martino and Lindsey Yamane of Hilo.

Brissette earns degree in Iowa

Jody Brissette of Honokaa graduated cum laude from Upper Iowa University in Fayette in October 2015 with a bachelor of science in public administration.

Honors qualifications for cum laude include a GPA of 3.5 to 3.7.
